The world in 2011: A year of risk and reward (Keynote speakers)

Jobs are still disappearing in many developed markets and there are increasing worries over national debts. Is the world becoming polarised between the so-called emerging growth markets and the economies of the old guard? What will the economic future bring for multinationals in the next year? Where are the political risks and where are the opportunities? Meanwhile, the world is in regulatory deadlock; currency and commodity volatility has become an everyday fact for treasury. What, then, can we expect from financial markets? What will interest rates do in key markets? Are the dollar’s days numbered as the world’s reserve currency? Will the euro even be around in two years? To bring some perspective to these questions, we interview Daniel Franklin, editor of The Economist publication, The World in 2011. He will give us a sneak preview of the 25th edition of this collection of predictions from journalists, politicians and experts and also cast his eye beyond the year ahead to give you some insight into the opportunities that may arise.

The external forces reshaping treasury (Panel)

Optimists say that not much has happened yet on the regulatory front and that it is all a storm in a teacup. Pessimists believe that the slew of impending regulation will have far-reaching and unintended consequences for companies in terms of their volatility, financial reporting, profitability and, ultimately, business strategy. From taxation changes to proposed legislation on OTC derivatives, fair value accounting, money market funds and perhaps most importantly, the banks, this session will look at regulation passed and pending. Our expert presenter will then be joined by regulators, bankers and companies. They will discuss the impact on banks, banking models and risk-pricing, and ultimately what this will mean for companies – not least their ability to raise funds and manage risk.
